From Simple Pieces of Silver to Beautiful Earrings

I was supposed to go to my workshop this morning, to handcraft two pairs of earrings which a buyer has ordered, pack them up, get to the  post office and ship them, so the buyer will be happy.

Rioritajewelry - View from my window this morning.

Instead - I woke up and looked out the window. Not only was it pouring cats and dogs, but it was so misty, I thought I did not wish to drive to my workshop in this weather, so I decided I will not hit the road today. Although on one hand, I always thank God for the rain, I was kind of frustrated as it was not according to plan. But sometimes one must change plans, so I decided to write how I designed two pairs of earrings, from four simple pieces of Sterling Silver.

Only two pieces photographed.(Who needs to see FOUR dull pieces anyways - LOL)
I sawed two pieces of flat silver and gave them bean-like shapes with a "window" close to the edges. I hammered them. Then I made a pair of earring hoops for them, by sawing two pieces of 0.9 sterling silver wire on each side on the back of the hoops.Through the "windows" I thread fine silver wire dangles which I wrapped around themselves.

Rioritajewelry - Silver Hoop Earrings

For the next pair of earrings, I sawed two more silver pieces with the same shape .

This time I decided to hand craft a pair of silver dangle earrings. I soldered a silver bow behind each piece of silver, then added the sterling silver ear wires, and threaded green Peridot beads on fine silver wire ,wrapped the silver wire around them, then hung them through the sawed "window". Finally I gold plated them thickly with 22k Gold.

I suppose one can come up with many more ideas with a pair of bean-like shapes, or any other shape you can imagine, and we know, there is no end to creativity among us humans.

However, if I have more ideas with these shapes, I will definitely come over here and try to show them to you. Promise. Rioritajewelry

A very Happy New Year to whoever read this post. Big Smile!!

More Sterling Silver Ear Jackets

I feel as if I have boarded a train while it is on the move. Ear Jackets on my mind,  so I follow my ideas as they come my way.

Here is another pair of Ear Jackets:

Sterling Silver Opal Ear Jackets by RioritaJewelry

I hammered flat silver to the shape of a half flower, as seen in the photograph above. Then I set three small Opal doublet cabochons on the flower.

To hold the ear jacket in place behind the ear lobe, I created stud earrings with a square Opal cabochon in the middle. The studs hold the earrings in place, by passing through one of the two holes I made on the back part of the earrings, as can be viewed in the following photographs.

These ear jackets can be either worn as seen above or - if you want a more demure look - you can wear the studs alone.

My Ear Jackets - New Pair of Sterling Silver Earrings

Lately I was going through various fashion magazines and saw there was a trend of Earrings called "Ear Jackets". Mostly these earrings go around the ear lobes and are connected to the ears with studs.

Friends told me - "We used to wear these earrings in the Eighties..."
Well - I was not handcrafting jewelry at that time, while today I am very enthusiastic about it!

I decided to try to make a few with my own designs, and find I enjoy making them.

Here is a pair I have made recently and found that they were rather popular in my Etsy shop:

The earrings are made of 3 combined hammered leaf shapes soldered like "steps" one next and on top of the other, and the final piece connects to the ears from the front, with ear studs, which enables you to wear them without the leaves too, as only studs.  I blacken the studs and the leafy design around the shiny parts, to emphasize the leafy shapes.

I have soldered a piece of sterling silver on the back of each earring, and made holes in them so that whoever wears them can adjust them properly to the ear lobes (as some of us have a longer distance of the ear holes from the lobes, than others).

I really Hope you like them.

Empress Julia Domna – Ancient Roman Coin Ring

Julia Domna - was a beautiful important woman in ancient Roman history.
She lived between  the years 170 AD - 217 AD.

Authentic Ancient Roman Coin Ring
Julia was the beloved wife of  the Roman Emperor Lucius Septimius Severus and mother of Emperors Geta and Caracalla. Was known for her high intelligence and was most influential in political affairs.

Julia was born into a very rich Roman senatorial aristocratic family, from the city of Homs (historically known as Emesa) in Syria.

She had a happy marriage. She was well read and loved philosophy,  admired by the emperor - her spouse..

Septimius Severus became emperor in 193 and became involved in a civil war. Julia accompanied him at a time when it was rather unusual for women to take part in wars, as only men attended the battle fields at that historical period,  but she stayed with her husband, and to show his gratitude, coins were struck with her image.

Julia Domna (170 AD - 217 AD)
Her hair style was beautiful and unique, an inspiration for many hair stylists even to this day.

After the death of her husband, Julia’s two sons were murdered on different occasions.
Julia suffered of breast cancer. She ended her own life by committing suicide.

I handcrafted a silver ring and set an ancient silver Roman coin in it:
You can see the image of Julia Domna on this authentic coin.

New Silver Gold Opal Ring

I have recently sold one of my Opal rings. Suddenly I had a feeling that my etsy shop needs an addition of a new Opal ring. I searched my box of stones. There it was, just waiting to be given all the loving attention it deserves - a  beautiful freeform natural Queensland Australian Pipe Opal stone.

I took it to my workshop and spontaneousely sat at my work bench and made this lovely ring:

After handcrafting the silver bezel and band, I felt I needed to add a few 14k tiny balls to each side of the bezel. This photograph shows how it looks when facing the ring:

I love the Pink, light Turquoise and  yellow glows of the ring with the brown sandstone which supports the Opal.

I am very happy with the result. I hope you will like it too after you hopefully
visit my shop. I believe you will find some more interesting jewelry pieces there.

Thank you for watching.

Silver Prehnite and Jasper Necklace

It has almost been a year before I visited this blog of mine. I guess moving from my old apartment to a new one, used up all my attention. Well, here I am again, and may I say, it is very nice to be here again.

This does not mean I haven't been handcrafting jewelry during this time. On the contrary, I've handcrafted quite a few new jewelry items. The latest and newest one is my Silver Prehnite and Jasper Necklace.

A few years ago I bought a row of beautiful large facetted Prehnite beads. It was love at first site. Such a beautiful Green color, facetted in an assymmetric way, with black inclusions here and there. Even though their price was higher than my budget, I bought them right away. Truth is I did not know what to do with them. How to do them justice and use them them best way I could, instead of just beading them on a string. Suddenly, a few days ago, I finally had an idea. I handcrafted a Sterling Silver bow, with two loops on each end, and twelve loops on the lower part of the bow. On each one of the soldered loops I hung Silver wires with twelve of the beads.

At first I only hung the Prehnite beads, but when I tried to see how it would look against my skin, I thought to myself "boring". Also, somehow they were beautiful, but against the skin they needed enhansement. So - I searched further among my beads and tried to match them with other much smaller ones of a contrastin color. I finally decided on the lovely facetted Orange Jasper beads which were lying there for a few years too.  I added them. Now, against the Prehnite they look awesome and enlivened my whole appearance. I loved the combination and decided that this was IT.

On each side of the bow I have added a smooth snake like industrial chain, with the thought that the chain should be a modest minimalistic one,so as not to compete with the beads. I added a hammered hook as a clasp and looked happily at the outcome. Hope you will like it too.

My Large Citrine Silver Flower Ring

Have I told you  before? I love using the Repousse technique when designing and planning a new  piece of jewelry. Somehow I prefer this to making models in wax, which is what most designers do these days. Instead of using wax  I like to simply pick up a piece of flat silver and hammer it to a certain form . I carefully hammer to my heart's delight, measure, cut etc. until I am satisfied with the result. This flower ring is one example.
Giant Citrine Silver Ring by Rioritajewelry
Giant Citrine Silver Ring by Rioritajewelry
For this ring I hammered two pieces of silver separately. I gave the larger piece a shape of a flower, to  the smaller – A shape which would be able to embed an oval bezel for a stone. I soldered them together, one facing the other, and finally soldered the bezel on top and set the Citrine stone in it, a silver band ring was added on the back.

I find the result is not bad at all. Don't you agree?

On the back you will find the Sterling silver hallmark and my personal signature.

It is a One of a kind (OOAK)  item.

As for the Citrine stone - it belongs to a mineral quartz group. The Citrine colors range from yellow , reminding us of the  more expensive Yellow Topaz – to brown which resembles Smokey Quartz.  There are orange variations too.

Citrine is also known as the “stone of the mind” because there were ancient cultures which believed that when placing this stone on  a human's  forehead,  it would increase his psychic abilities. Well, as I have a few Citrine stones, and am not so very young any more, only at heart that is, I will try this on myself. Perhaps I shall even let you know the results...(Laughing Out Loud).

Getting serious again - When  Citrine crystals and  Amethyst stones are formed together by heating,  a  bi-colored gemstone is created - the Ametrine.

And more – most Citrine stones in the market today, are heat-treated Amethysts and mostly arrive from Brazil Although Brazil  sells natural stones too. More  Citrine stonescome to us from The Ural Mountains in Russia,  France and Madagascar.  The brown stone in my ring is a NATURAL Citrine stone.

Lower grade Citrine stones result from being heated at  high temperatures.  By using this process we receive a variety of orange,  and Cherry  colors.  The darker they get - the more valuable they are.

New Handcrafted Ancient Roman and Greek Coin Jewelry

Being a person who loves to indulge in ancient history, I am always somewhat excited when I add a new Ancient coin to my collection. I keep many of the coins in my collection, but when I have similar items, I allow myself to create jewelry with them and try to market them, hoping people will discover the charm of wearing ancient coins, which have been around for thousands of years, as much as I do,

Lately I have handcrafted three different jewelry pieces with some of my favorite Antique coins:

Authentic bronze coin which was struck around 337AD. The front of the coin reveal the image of Constantius II , sun of the great Constantine I, who was the emperor of Romebetween the years 337AD and 361AD. On the back you will observe an oak wreath with monograms. The coin is set in a Sterling  bezel.  I decided to create a minimal design. The coin pendant hangs from a Sterling Silver foxtail necklace.
Sncient Roman Coin Sterling Silver Necklace - Constantius

The length of the  necklace can be readjusted acc. to customer's requirements
The necklace can be worn two sides.

 2. Ancient Greek Coin Necklace - Goddess Athena

Another necklace, with a very rare bronze Ancient Greek coin.  On the front of this coin you can see the image of Greek Goddess Athena. The coin was struck in Thessalonica, Macedonia - Greece, between  158-149 B.C.  Athena's head is shown with a helmet, which is one of her attributes. On the back you will find an oak wreath with monograms. This coin is from a short period after the Romans had conquered the Macedonians.  The style of the coin is rather Roman than Greek, as in Roman coins from that period.

I hammered a round pendant with a design surrounding the bezel of the coin. I set the coin in the middle. I added two loops on each side of the pendant. To each loop I added an industrial loop chain. The necklace has a hammered hook close to the pendant, simply because I personally like it that way. However, if customers prefer to shorten the chain or change  the hook to the back, I can change this. I will appreciate it if customers let me know prior to purchase.

It is a a statement necklace and a one of a kind item ooak).

This is another coinfacing  Constantius II. The coin is set on top of a Sterling Silver ring. I decorated the sides by wrapping a fine silver thread. The inside  of the ring shows us the large winged Goddess Nike who is the Goddess of Victory. Her name in Roman mythology is - Victoria.

My New Giant Silver Ruby Ring

As July's birthstone is the Ruby, here are a few important facts about this stone:
Rubies are naturally created from aluminum oxide -  corundum -  which also exists in Sapphires.  The Ruby's range of colors is from Pink to Blood red. The red colors  come from the element chromium in the mineral. The name "Ruby" originated from  Latin "ruber" which means "red".The most valuable Rubies are the brighter ones. They are called "pigeon blood-red". What also determines their price is clarity and weight (carat) . Every authentic Ruby has needle-like inclutions such as in authentic Aquamarine stones. A Ruby whithout the "needles" is probably a stone which was treated.

To handcraft my new giant Ruby Ring I hammered a flat piece of sterling silver to the shape of a flower. Then I picked a dark oval Ruby cabochon and set it in the middle . The color of the stone is  dark red and it has the needle inclusions I've mentioned above.  Finally I attached a hammered sterling band on the back, oxidized it and gave it a satin finish.  The other side of the ring is oxidized too.

Last month I had added another red gemstone ring to my Etsy shop. The stone is a lovely Rhodocrosite stone which I set in a sterling silver ring which I had handcrafted for it:

Silver and Rhodocrosite Ring

Rhodocrosite is a mineral with  multiple shades. The range is  Raspberry red to rose pink and even slightly orange hues. Most of the Rhodocrosite stones are found in Argentina.

Rhodochrosite is said to create for you a harmonious life with love and friendship, kindness, tolerance together with self-love. It is said to improve eye sight. The Incas believed this gemstone contains the blood of their ancient kings which has become stone. Therefor they call it  "Inca Rose".

This ring has a most beautiful pink color. reminds me very much of a Ruby without needle inclusions.

December stone - Black Onyx Defence

What is Onyx?  It is a semi-precious stone, Chaldedony, which in nature, is found mostly in  brown, red, white, and black. Chalcedony is a large range of stones formed from silicon dioxide better known to us as quartz.

Here is what they have to say about what Onyx does to you- Have you had any feelings of anger lately? the kind  that makes you feel small and bitter against almost everyone who comes your way? You get up in the morning and you just hate how your partner drinks his coffee in the morning? you want to yell at your new neigbours in your apartment  building to stop slamming their door whenever they go out, ..but  know you have to restrain yourself and have a nice polite little talk with them and you simply can't get yourself to do it?....Or - your favorite pet has  passed away..or something  you have heard on the news which made you feel uncomfortable?...

Well, it is said that when you wear an Onyx stone on your body, it helps release all these negative emotions.  Do you want to end an unhappy relationship? Onyx will give you the energy to do it. It  guards you against negativity from others.. Onyx will defend you against your own bad feelings and of others toward you.

It is also said that as black means the absence of light - invisibility, the dark protects you. Therefore,  In the dark, your senses and awareness are sharpened. You love yourself more!
Model Maital wearing my Onyx and Silver Necklace

Well.......this is what they say about Onyx. I personally believe that when I get up in the morning, I should say to myself: "I am strong! I can control myself! I love myself! I love everyone and am able to accept them as they are! and..... I am going to wear these lovely Onyx earrings I left by my bedside because they go well with my outfit and will show everyone what a wonderful positive person I am!!!".......(?)

Between you and me - you should teach yourself to be positive if you wear Onyx or you don't. but one thing is definitely most certain - Onyx makes most women look their best!

I handcrafted a pair of Onyx earrings and a necklace.
Here they are for you:

1. Elegant Silver and black onyx necklace .Oval Onyx stone and sterling Necklace handmade by hammering flower shapes with  dispersed  tiny granulations which are soldered around a Silver bezel with a large oval Onyx stone. The result is a  romantic elegant pendant, which is hung on a thick industrial sterling silver chain.

size of the pendant: 50mm x 45mm (about 2" x1.8")
Length: 45cm (18")

2. Black Onyx and silver dangle earrings,  I used  13x16mm (about 0.10" x 0.12") bezels.  In them I set black oval rosecut Onyx stones. The bezels are of sterling silver and they dangle from elegant sterling earring posts too.The bezels are soldered to an oval flat oxidized silver plate 0.6 m"m thick . The  length from the end of the posts is 27mm.

So now that I've told you my thoughts - get up, wear your most charming smile and wear my earrings or  my necklace

Happy Holidays everyone!

Happy teardrop Earrings

I have searched the internet for the term  "Happy Teardrops", to find something suitable  for this  post, but there  were  too many sad teardrops.  The only "happy tears" I found were a title of a song and a play, but they  did not fit here.

I guess the only really  happy tears, are the ones I intend to write about - My earrings. Why  HAPPY? because who needs SAD?

OK now. Enough with the blah!

Here are three pairs of teardrop earrings directly from my Etsy shop:

 Green Apple quartz earrings:
These stunning teardrop earrings are handcrafted from sterling silver with  a tiny 14k gold ball and Green Apple Quartz stones. I chose these unique rosecut stones, because of the exceptional colors.

Their length from top to bottom: 1.45"(about 3.6cm).
Stone sizes: 9mm x 13mm.
Thickness of the earwires: 0.8mm
Weight: about 2.4 – 2.7 grams.

The next pair are the ones I handcrafted with small round Amethyst cabochons

These earrings are created from sterling silver. A tiny 14ct gold ball was added, and on the bottom there is a 7mm diam.  Amethyst cabochon. There are hooks behind the earrings .

Length:0.70" from end of the ear-wires

The third pair are similar to the Amethysts but with the difference that they are set with Garnets

My Garnet and Silver dangle earrings.

As I searched, I found a favorite country  song:

Hope you all enjoy your holidays and if you must have tears, let them only be HAPPY ONES!

Affordable Quality Jewelry Gifts with Sterling Silver and Stones

I have a tendency to design my handmade jewelry, trying new ideas, not considering the cost of components but just go on excitedly to create  items which would beautify women. Of course not all these more expensive designs are popular with buyers. I just take a chance by using various stones, some more expensive and some - less.  But  then it gets to pricing. I realize I might have to give them a higher price, as there is more silver in them.( Of course, the more silver you add to an item, the more expensive the item turns out to be). Then I have to consider the price of stones and the work invested....so I have to go back down to earth and say to myself "think about your customers dear, after all, you want to sell this. Don't you?"

So here I am, thinking as a gift buyer: " I need to buy, say, 10 gifts. I want people to enjoy my gifts.  I cannot spend more that $25-27 for a gift. My girl friend likes silver earrings and stones, but I cannot afford to spend more!"

As I know now how a gift buyer thinks, I decided to handcraft a pair of earrings which I would like to wear myself, and which would not be too costly!  I created two small triangle sterling posts and added small lovely Red Agate beads to dangle from their edges. A simple design but - sometimes the simplest ideas are the best!

I believe I have handcrafted  a  lovely pair of affordable earring studs with authentic stones. I can honestly tell you that if someone would have given these earrings to me on Christmas eve, it would make me very happy. I'd feel that the person who gave them to me, thought of what I would love to have. He thought of ME when he bought these.

Attached is a photo of a lovely model - Meital who is wearing these earring posts:

The same earrings can be made with other beads too, such as small fresh water pearls, mother of pearl beads and lovely Aqua Marine beads.

Thank you for watching!

Tourmaline and Silver Flower Earrings - Pink and Blue green

I have returned from my vacation, have rested for a few days and then decided it was high time I became creative again, as  my grand kids and creativiy, are the things which get me going in life. I began by thinkung "this is September. I will make September stone earrings with sapphires". I searched through my small  collection of stones, but could not find Sapphires which would go with earrings. As it was too hot and damp outside, I gave up the idea of going down to my favorite shop, where I buy stones for setting and between you and me - I've become a too lazy to walk in this summer's unbearable weather.

While searching through my stone collection I found a few Tourmaline cabochons, one was blue green and the other - pink. I had an idea of a pair of earrings in my mind. So I spontaneousely got to work at my table and this is the outcome:

The earrings are somewhat longer than the standard dangles, but not too long. I am a small woman and I felt that I could wear these earrings too, as they are in proportion with the length of my own neck.

As I like to search other people's shops too, I  have searched "pink and blue green" on Etsy and found quite a few lovely items under these tags. Here are a few of them:

T

The last wonderful unique item comes from Finland, out of a shop named ForMyDarling where you may find mittens, bags, homedecor, owls , birds and wedding decor. The following
are a lovely example of the warmth and love invested in them:

The owner of "ForMyDarling" loves to work mainly with wool, she collects all her materials in flea markets, and creates her felt by using her washing machine.

I guess I could find many more beautiful items on Etsy under the tag "blue green and pink" but there are so many shops there, and I do not wish to tire you with a too lon post!

My visit to Venice

For many years I've been wanting to visit Venice in Italy. After having read  the history of  this wonderful unusual city, viewing a few movies photographed in it,  and reading a few books having to do with Venice, I decided it was high time for me to go and see for myself.

I therefore joined a group of people whose common interest was art in Venice, and travelled there. We arrived at Milano and on the way to Venice had visited Mantova where we viewed the palaces of the Gonzaga family. Then we drove on to Venice.

The excited emotions I felt when approaching the city on the long bridge the "Via de Liberta" connecting  between the mainland and the city,  are beyond compare to any other I felt when arriving at a large and famous place.

The Ponte della Libertà, was designed in 1932 by Eugenio Miozzi and opened by Benito Mussolini in 1933. It is 4 km long and the only way one can arrive at Venice by car or bus. There is also a railroad which was constructed in 1846. Before this, one could get to Venice by boat only.....

When the bus could not go any further, we took a boat to our hotel in the Giudecca Island in the Venetian lagoon and as it was late in the evening we started touring the city the following morning.

This postcard shows an ancient map of Venice from 1565.

As there is a lot of information in Google concerning Venice, I will only say in short, that there is the venetian lagoon and There are about 177 canals, 354 bridges and 118 islands connecting to one another in it .

After a long walk through the streets of the Piazza San Marco, a visit to the Academia gallery, the Peggy Guggenheim museum, the Scuola di san rocco, the church of Santa Maria dei Frari (The Frari Basilica) and  churches with some of the most beautiful and amazing famous art pieces, (OK - not all in one day!!!) My friend Rina and I decided to sit in one of the many restaurants and cafes there and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

I guess the waiters took a quick look at us, and rightfully assumed we were too tired to change our minds about sitting there, and had us spend some 63.00 Euro together on two cups of coffee,  apple pie with cream, a little music, a tip, and the visit of a cute pidgeon who wanted to share with us....Well as this was a once (or twice)  in a lifetime  experience we did not take it too much to heart).

I cannot show all the 200  photographs of Venice I took there, but here are a few of my favorites:
View across our hotel

We were luckily  permitted to enter the the Grand Teatro La Fenice in Venice. I've been to a few grand theatres before, but this is one of the most impressive:
This is just a small sample. One should see the place.
It drew quite a few "WOWs" from us when we entered.
An excerpt from a  column in the Doges's palace in Piazza San Marco

One of my favorite writers, Henry James, who enjoyed long stays in Venice  where he had written the novels "The Aspern Papers" and  "The Wings of the Dove" (which takes place in Venice, and which was  filmed and  nominated for an Academy Award) and  also completed there the writing of the novel "Portrait of a  Lady"wrote with regard to the statue seen hereunder in front of the church of Saint John and Paul:

Height of the statue is 395cm without the base.

One of my favorite writers, Henry James, who enjoyed long stays in Venice  where he had written the novels "The Aspern Papers" , finished writing "Portrait of a Lady" and  "The Wings of the Dove" (which takes place in Venice, and which was  filmed and  nominated for an Academy Award) wrote about the statue by Verrochio seen hereunder in front of the church of Saint John and Paul:

"The statue is incomparable, the finest of all mounted figures, unless that of Marcus Aurelius, who rides benignant before the Roman Capitol, be finer......he continued to look far over my head, at the red immersion of another day- he had seen so many go down into the lagoon through the centuries - and if he were thinking of battles and stratagems they were of a different quality from any I had to tell him of.He could not direct me what to do, gaze up at him as I might..."
********
Many thanks to our guide Dr. Efi Ziv, who saw to it that we do not miss a single art piece of the great painters Tizian,Tintoretto,Veronese, statues of Donatello and more, and took care of every detail in our little trip.

Thanks to my dear friend Rina Karmoush who helped me remember a few almost forgotten details.

I could write more about Venice and the genius grand art we saw and learned to appreciate there,  but this is only a post in my blog. I can only tell you  that it has not been my last visit to Venice, and I itend to go there again sometime in the future, as you can spend many days there and never lose interest.

On our way back to Milano we had visited Ravenna,Padova,Verona...but I shall leave these unforgettable places for  another post...perhaps!
